 Defence scientists are trying to harness properties of world’s hottest chilli for use in mob controlThe Defence Research Laboratory (DRL) at Tezpur in Assam has established, after extensive research, that ‘Bhoot Jolokiya’, also called Naga chilli, can be turned into a grenade without being lethal. The Guinness Book of World Records has declared Bhoot Jolokiya as the hottest chilli in the world. Not only that, the extracts from the chilli - exported to the US where it is a favourite among foodies[sic] - can be used in powdered form to drive away animals, say DRL scientists. They are working on making a grenade using the chilli’s properties. The grenade can be used by police and military personnel to disperse unruly mobs and other purposes. The advantage of the chilli grenade would be its non-lethal nature, said DRL scientist R P Srivastava. “Be it controlling mob violence or flushing out extremists from their hideouts, the grenade will come in handy without posing physical danger,” he said. The DRDO and World Wildlife Fund are also working on developing a powdered form of the chilli that could be coated on fences and ropes to keep wild elephants at bay in many parts of the Northeast.
